Why Begin an Internet Business? With No Money?
I have to admit: I’m a little bit crazy. I hold down a full time job with decent pay and benefits, but like so many people today the money I make just isn’t getting me anywhere worth going. So rather than linger on this treadmill to nowhere I had to look for alternative ways to make money.
My Background: Finance/Investments and Computer Technical Skills
When I made the decision that “things had to change” in my life, one of the smartest things I did was to do a relatively honest self-assessment of my skills. I had a Master’s Certificate in Finance, and as a result had better than average computer technical skills. I am not the most gregarious person in the world, but I am reasonably friendly. I also have a willingness to take substantial risks.
Given that reasonably fair self assessment, it only seemed natural that I would gravitate toward online investing and or day trading as a potential source of income. Unfortunately the world of finance (mostly) operates only during the hours when I am actually supposed to be working. Obviously that presents a problem. It might have been possible to operate in the forex trading markets, but that activity is really for the big boys, prone to heavy bullying by well capitalized banks. It requires 24 hr / 5 day per week attention to make real money, and just did not lend itself to someone with a full time job.
The assessment: Not enough capital, not enough time. Odds of success? Not great.
In truth I did make quite a bit of money as a stock picker over the years (mostly options trading), which earned me enough to overcome several health issues / expenses over the years – but again, this amounted to treading water.
I Needed to Find a Way to Get Ahead
Not enough money/capital to earn a living wage day trading, not enough time to grind out extra income part time with the meager capital I had. I was straining day and night to figure out a way to turn my time and skills into another income stream. Then it hit me:

My immediate thoughts on the matter were “No, I can’t,” because I had tried an internet startup company back in the mid 1990s when people were just starting to get online. Getting online had been ridiculously expensive and required connections, computers, and software that I just couldn’t develop on my own (believe me, we tried!). I know I’ve told you the story about the magazine article I saw, where the guy was simply turning words into money buying up cheap domain names.
I figured, “Hey, I’m smart. I can do that!” So I started buying a few domain names. The problem was that buying the domain names wasn’t enough. You had to know what the heck to do with them once you owned them – and I didn’t know ANYTHING about that.
The Biggest Mistake I Ever Made
It was THEN I made the biggest mistake I ever made in my short internet marketing career: I decided I need to start building websites in order to make money online. I mean, couldn’t I just begin an internet business with a few domain names and websites I built on them? WRONG!!!!!!!
I just couldn’t have been more wrong. The internet was changing rapidly and competition to create the easiest to use website development platform was making my rudimentary web programming skills obsolete. Why on earth would anyone like me spend time pain-stakingly programming websites by hand when vastly superior and more user-friendly sites were available free to add to your hosting account with the click of a button?
Believe me I gained some *AWESOME* skills learning to program my own websites but made absolutely ZIP doing it (editorial note: the skills I learned did make a huge impression at my day job – so it wasn’t a total waste of time). I blew about a year and a couple thousand dollars on hosting plans, domain names, software, and *most of all* – my time.
Beginning an Internet Business with No Money Should Be Focused on
Results
Gaining *experiences* is what I was supposed to do in college (and I did!). Starting a BUSINESS however has to focus on real economic outcomes… SALEABLE, TANGIBLE RESULTS.
I am not to go into it further here, but suffice to say there are NUMEROUS tangible results a person can acheive when they begin an internet business… even with no money. I took the liberty of putting some thoughts down in my mind maps pdf (available for free for joining my facebook group).
